Art, is not a luxury, but a tool for survival.
We take this lesson from Audre Lorde one step further: Art, like poetry, is not a luxury, but a tool for survival. A life event--with all its accompanying emotions and consequences--can, through art, be interpreted, examined, and re-experienced on new terms. The result can inspire us all: to imagine the future we hope for, and to find the courage we need to reach for it. ARTogether dreams of a community of refugees inspired to make their stories heard.
As we grow our creative arts programs for the general refugee community--outlined in our mission--we are also developing services for refugees who were artists by profession in their countries of origin. These artists face numerous obstacles to practicing art after resettlement, especially in a location as prohibitively expensive as the Bay Area. ARTogether offers a range of resources to mitigate the hardships of starting over as an artist in a new country. We provide access to a network of established resident artists, as well as assistance in applying for funding that supports their creative work.
ARTogether has long term plans of operating from its own central facility. This is a space that would encompass a spectrum of services and resources to the refugee community: a studio with open access to art supplies, a classroom area for ongoing workshops, a computer lab for digital projects, and an exhibition space to showcase the ARTogether community’s creative pieces.
